Kit Downes, Petter Eldh & James Maddren - On playing with 7
From a masterclass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam◊
During a November 2022 workshop piano player Kit Downes referred to a kind of game they play in the trio. They use the ordinary 7 clave, divide it 2 2 3 and then voice it over the drum-kit in patterns of 4.
One possible way to interpret and notate this by using a carnatic1 approach:
- gathi misra (septuplets)
- 2 2 3 matras, i.e. equal units of the gati (one suptuplet here) on the drums with rotating pitches on bass drum hi-hat and snare
- misra jathi bedham (groupings) 4 5 5 4 5 5 on the piano
